The greatest game ever!!!!!!!!!

Save to del.icio.us
Well done lads I think this was the best game I have ever captained.

Lets go back in time to Tuesday night, selection committee and 2 hours of head scratching, news of weakened teams and 10 players missing from 1st 2nd's and 3rds. I felt so sorry for Roy and the 4ths but the strength of the club being in our youth policy we traveled to South Devon with young team but what I thought was a good team but not my strongest and with South Devon having a reputation of being very aggressive we were in real danger of being hammered.

The day started well and after I discovered that I was planning to start the game half an hour before we should have (you boys missed that at fines) their captain (Ben) and I went out for the toss, the wicket looked hard, the outfield looked very fast and it was very very hot, the unusual event of winning the toss I went into shock and heard myself utter the words "you can have a bat". This is the best way to win games in the league but it meant that the young guns would have to field in batting heaven on a hot day and then chase down about 250 or more. Getting back to tell the boys the good news Nigel, Sanjay and Gerry all said in unison "you always bat 1st at South Devon".

Thinking we needed to warm up and get my bowlers ready for the impending ball smashing we were about to take part in Sanjay took the bowlers and Tony Chapman over to send a few balls down while I relied the fielders with talk of how hard we will have to work. With Phil Barrow and Dinuka Kuruppu away the decision of opening bowlers was easy Jack Hughes and Passi Mawalage had the new ball. Their openers M Blackmore and B Allen put on 100 run partnership without a chance and I was think we should have batted sitting in the shade drinking juice life would have so easy, but no I chose to make my boys chase a little red ball around a very big park all afternoon.

After trying Sayjay and Jordan we thought that taking the pace off the ball and making the batsmen play through the V would be the best plan. Cometh the hour cometh the man, Nigel Hughes bowls a sightly slower than slow ball and Blackmore smashes the ball to new boy Jon Varcoe, you could hear the intake of air as we all sucked wishing to god he didn't drop it. He caught it I think the seconds heard my reaction in Sandford. We had the breakthrough a few overs and I removed the other opener playing on. Fresh meat at the crease, slow bowling on and we closing down their scoring options. Our fielding at this stage was going through a better phase.

Nigel Hughes and I bowled a strange sort of slow bowling partnership that slowed their scoring down but wickets were hard to come by, I turned back to my opening bowlers hoping that they would smash their middle order, but the extra pace and a wicket that was dying by the ball was a mistake and after 3 overs each Nigel and I came back. The run chase was on and as they tried to hit us they fell on their swords. Nigel ended things in the final over to claim an amazing 6-52 off 13.2 overs and I bags 4-52 off 13 overs.

After teas we sent openers Ben Stein and Joe Cunningham went out with words like "build a platform" and "steady start" but the home team knew how to play on this wicket and gentle seamers opened their bowling and removed both openers for about 50. Then came the passage of play that set up the win and defined the game, Sanjay Dindyal and Jonny Varcoe regrouped and then set about their bowlers. The South Devon bowlers weren't shy in telling our youngsters what they thought about the way they were batting and tempers started to fray.

After Jonny fell on 29 we had a mini collapse but Passi Mawalage and Sanjay stopped the rot and started smashing 4's everywhere. We were back with a sniff but another mini collapse (Sanjay falling for a great 41) youngsters Tony Chapman and Passi were our last real hopes of victory and the boys played better then I have seen such young players play with such fantastic gamesmanship and skill. They threw everything at our 2 boys and they threw everything back with a bit more. The game was too close to call but one thing was sure there will be a winner them or us, the draw just wasn't an option. Tony smashed the best 28no I have ever seen from him and Passi just went from hero to legend the boy is just brilliant, he play the masterful innings and smashed 2 back to back 4's to win the game and to bag a PCC best 76no.

P.S nets this week we will be drilling fielding drills, working on our ground fielding and running lots.
