After 2 disappointing defeats and relegation becoming a reality the 4s took on local rivals Plympton IIIs at Delganey to try and gain some much needed points to keep survival a reality.
Thankfully Roy called correctly at the toss and had no worries in sticking the opponents into bat on a very green wet wicket. Dan Goodey and Jack Widnell opened the bowling and both bowled fantastically, each claiming 2 wickets. Dan's wickets were bowled and caught by Rothers, Jack's were caught by Jono and another for Rothers. The Efford Express Joe Cunningham, fresh from holidaying in the Med, came on and also claimed 2 wickets, another catch for Rothers (3 in total) and a good catch at point by Dan Goodey. We had Plympton at 22-6 but one key partnership took them up into the 80s until the King of Spain Nigel Hughes bowled their skipper around his legs. A run out from skipper Barnes (not sure the ball actually hit the stumps though, did it Jono??) and 2 wickets for Golden Arm Rothwell, a catch (at long last) at slip from Jimmy H and a second catch for Jono and we had bowled Plympton out for 99.
We had to go out for 45 minutes before tea and for 10 overs Roy and Nige had done a great job of seeing off the overs until both these 2 and Joe fell in the space of 3 overs and we were 10-3. Rothers and Jimmy got us to tea without anymore drama.
Would love to write that those 2 got us to 100 without any further loss but no this isn't Hollywood! Rothers fell with the score on 20, then Colin joined Jimmy and these 2 put on 18 before the regular collapse took place. 38-4 became 38-8 as first Jimmy, then Colin, Stevie Colmer and Dan Goodey all got out. The innings didn't last much longer as we were bowled out for 48, Jack getting 3, Barney 0 and Jono 3 not out. It was a bowler friendly pitch and hard to bat on but we this was an awful effort with at least 5 of the wickets given away due to poor shot selection.
Looking for positives amongst this can be found with the bowling and fielding performance. All 7 catches were held and the fielding was pretty sharp throughout. All bowlers got some reward apart from Barney who also bowled with good discipline until their skipper decide to unleash in his last over. We went a bit flat during their only partnership but responded well and kept up the intensity.
Batting again is the big problem, at best during the second half of the season we have only had 2 partnerships of more than 20 in a game. This is not good enough and something that needs to be worked on in time for next season. Not giving up until the maths says we are down though!!!
