A tremendous effort by Richard Gill in carrying his bat for 60* gave PCC some breathing space in the lower echelons of the A Division.
Plymstock batted first on a fine day at Deans Cross but were soon wishing it was raining as they reached 0-2 after 3 overs - each opener being bowled by newbie opener Alex Hill and not so newbie Phil Barrow.
Stalwart Duncan Brace and new acquisition Rob Baker were both dropped off Phil's bowling at mid-off when Plymstock were still around the 20 mark and both were to reach their respective 50s to turn the initial part of the game completely around.
Alex had been replaced by Richie McPherson and Phil by Martin Gill as Baker smashed some capital shots around the park.
Baker went for 52, LBW to Richie and Captain Paul Birleson was softly caught behind just before the drinks interval to leave the hosts 83-4. James Collins and Brace added a further 41 in frustrating Plymouth but Collins and Whalley 9after an initial scoring shot of 6) fell to Richie and Gilly - 140-6.
New bat Saeed Ali questioned a figure near the long-on boundary only to be informed that it was actually Liam dressed as a fielder. Ali went quickly to Gilly and Duncan Brace became the 8th wicket down when Richard Gill had him caught by Richie for 69. Liam savage scored 18 but the innings ended when Phil came back and bowled left arm spinner Ross Maffey for 0. Gilly bowled an excellent 13 over spell of 13-1-36-3 and Richie finished with 3-55.
So, 182 to win. Rather a lot on current form but a 50 partnership for the 1st wicket laid the foundation for a good win. Jon Varcoe naughtily got himself stumped when he could have satyed there all afternoon. Saeed Ali was only allowed 3 overs, a very strange decision and Rich Gill, Jon's opening partner began his long stay at the crease. He demonstrated admirable concentration and didnt give a chance. You get the feeling Rich couuld make a habit of this and it's just what any team needs.
Alex Thomas hit a quickish 31 without being in too much trouble but Alex Hill followed soon afterwards after hitting two boundaries from his first two balls, chasing a wide one to be caught behind for 8.
Gareth, too, went for 8 but Jake Foley inwardly applauded Plymstock's decision to spread out early doors as he compiled a well made 26 before being bowled uglyly (is that a word?) Rich made his 3rd 0 in a row just before the end and Plymouth gained valuable points to go above Braunton.
Why not be positive again and look to finish in the top 5? Great win though against the local team.
