FOURTHS LOSE MUST WIN MATCH AGAINST *censored*INGTON
On the completion of selection on Wednesday night the fourths looked to have their strongest side of the season but with the usual late call offs and four changes later it did not resemble the team selected.
On Saturday the fourths hosted *censored*ington in a basement battle which was a must win for Plymouth. The away side arrived with a much different side from the one that they faced earlier in the season in the corresponding fixture and they made it clear from the off that losing was not option and relegation had to be avoided at all costs.
Captain BARNES lost the toss and *censored*ington invited Plymouth to bat the opening overs looked good for Plymouth and Captain BARNES and Nigel Hughes set about the visiting bowlers until Captain BARNES having scored 19 and with the score on 31 was bowled. A mini collapse then followed with a further three wickets falling and with the home side being 48 - 4 things looked bleak Nigel was unfortunate to be run out for 19 following a mix up with Jimmy. Andy SEWELL came to the wicket and him and Jimmy took the score to 121 before Jimmy fell also for 19. Andy reached a fine 51 but was one of three wickets to fall when the score was on 131. Matt ALLATT fell shortly afterwards and the two young uns who have done so much for the team this season Steve COLMER and Jonno CUMMINGS took the total to 154, Steve remaining unbeaten on 11. This seemed competitive looking back over the first innings totals scored at Torpoint during the current season.
In reply *censored*ington started slowly and their openers were lucky to survive some close decisions. It was decided to bring on the old guard in an effort to gain the necessary wickets and Abbo and Nigel obliged removing one a piece when the score was on 34 and a further wicket fell with the score on 46 and with both bowlers giving very little away the required 155 looked a long way off. Further close decisions failed to go Plymouth's way and as usual the obligatory dropped catches harmed Plymouth's chances as graduallly *censored*ington took control of the match and reached the total with only five wickets down and a few overs to spare. ABBO and Nigel bowled well and their efforts kept us in the match for long periods finishing with figures of 13 - 5 - 32 - 3 and 13 - 4 - 35 - 1 respectively.
The points were *censored*ington 20 - Plymouth 5 and this result now leaves Plymouth 14 points from safety.
A changing room enquiry was conducted and the following conclusions were reached and spoken about: -
1. Despite believing all season that we were too good to go down the table doesn't lie, for the whole of the current season we have not been good enough and despite a few individual highlights the team has NOT performed on a regular basis.
2. An average of 5 - 6 dropped catches each match have proved costly.
3. A lack of desire by numerous players to put in the effort when required has been all too common place.
4. Poor attendance to training and a lack of application when persons attend training see too many people getting dismissed in the same manner every week and a serious lack of discipline when bowling and fielding.
5. The current pool of players have NOT been good enough to compete in the league and with out the ability to loads teams like other clubs the fourths are now facing up to the serious possibility of relegation.
If you have not already slashed your wrists reading this article there is still a chance of survival, players need to look at themselves hard in the mirror and if things do not change and change quickly then relegation will NOT be a prospect it will be reality.
To take away the gloom read a report from the 2nds who continue to move forwards and demonstrate to others what is required to be winners.
