Dartington and Totnes, just too good for us on the day

Save to del.icio.us
The weather was a good reflection of the game, started bad, got better but there was no silver lining.

Roy started the game off well with letting their captain call wrong and putting them into bat on a very green track which looked as if 120 would be a winning target. Jack Widnell a Ben Singlehurst open the bowling but only got the wicket of M Jarvis for 14 (1-28), things went from bad to worst as R.Sugden and G.Colegate put on 82 before Abo took the 1st of his wickets in his 1st over Sugden 39 (2-110), Colgate easied to 59 and was their rock of the innings as they posted 185-7. Abo collected 5-37 but we had fought hard to get back into the game after being smashed in the early overs. I feel that it was just one of those things if we were a bit more lucky we could have been chasing 140-150 but we never put them under pressure and they batted freely.
After tea we knew that we had to bat well to get to 123 to get a draw and bat out of our skins to chase down a win and at leat 17 points. Joe Cunningham and Nigel Hughes opened our reply and started to look settled before Joe took on a risky 2nd run and was run out, Alex Thomas smashed a 4 through point before miss timing a drive and was caught at mid on. This started this weeks classic Plymouth collapse 5 ducks in a row, making our score card look like a fairground duck shoot as we went from 17-1 to 37-7. Little Stevie Colmer and the warhorse Nigel Hughes saved our blushes and batted 12 overs putting on 41 getting us to 78-8 before Nigel was caught for 37, Colin Wood hit 2 4s in a partnership of 13 before he was giving out LBW for 8 91-9 and Tamsin Shorbrook was walking out. We all hoped that we could creap over 100 and collect the extra point but Tam proved she could cut the mustard and little Stevie was looking settled, getting over the 100 was like winning most games I have played over the years and maybe thats how important each point is. 110 was past and maybe I stared to get gready talking about 123 for the draw and 125 for the extra point but soon after the real World hit home and Steve Colmer was caught for a fine 24, a young player playing agaisnt their best bowlers and taking charge of our position a good innings and hopefully he has learnt a lot more about the game than 100 nets could.
We only got 4 points and maybe that could cost us at the end of season, Torquay away this week and points will be even harder to get. But this week is thw 30th anniversy of 1981 Ashes test at Headingley (500-1, Ian Botham 149no Bob Willis 8-43 and winning by 18 and all that) prof that miracles do happen.
