Crunch time for IIIs after Braunton loss

Save to del.icio.us
With the next two games against Sidmouth (bottom) and Plymstock (next to bottom), the IIIs really need to compete again - we need a bit of selfishness, maybe, from our batsmen and " wiv a little bit of bloooooooomin' luck" going our way.......plus take our catches.....

Braunton won the toss and inserted PCC and it was Jon Varcoe and James Rothwell who gave us an excellent start, putting on 51 - James had been dropped on 9 in the 11th over but finally fell for 17 giving Latham he bowler a return catch. Richie MacPherson fell for a duck, bowled by Johnson (55-2 in the 20th over).

Jon fell 10 runs later but Gareth Hart and Dave Watson put on 25 until Dave was bowled for 9. Gareth was bowled for 28 and Marcus Deane failed to trouble the scorers leaving PCC in a perilous position of 107-6. Jake was our last hope and when Lewis Edmonds, having nervelessly hit 5 singles, was bowled, Phil was promoted to hopefully make contact in that not too subtle way. Anyway, Jake fell almost immediately for a nice 24 off 32 balls and Phil played and missed at hittable "out off-stump" deliveries before being bowled by a slower ball. Barnney Cauldwell was last out for 2, leaving Gilly undefeated on a single. 136 all out after exactly 46 overs.

This left Braunton requiring 137 for victory - not a great deal but if we managed early breakthroughs, who knows?

The openers survived fairly comfortably although there were a fair share of edges/byes that went for 4. the left hander Manning played solidly and the right hander Johnson looked limited bar a big heave for 6 off Gilly who lacked his usual control early on. Gilly made up for it with 3 wickets and the bowlers never gave up but Braunton won by 7 wickets - at the end of the day, we need a full strength team or else we will continue to struggle to compete.
