Plymouth 315 (B Stein 82, H Kandampully 57, R Button 55, B Fererro 48; J Leat 4-60, A Conway 3-69, L Murrin 2-84), Budleigh 160-9 (I Taylor 65, J Leat 21, A Conway 24; H Kandampully 3-41, R Button 3-31, Pavi Mawalagi 2-40).Plymouth (15pts) drew with Budleigh (8).
With the seconds probably fielding their strongest team of the season against a much improved Budleigh a nothing more than a win was expected.
Having lost the toss (AGAIN!!!) Budleigh decided to put Plymouth in to bat on what looked a geen but very good Mount Wise Track.
The 2 Bens opened up and immediately got the team off to a flyer scoring boundaries at will and after 10 overs we were 80 for no wicket untill Ben FERRAO got a bit carried away with his extravaganmt stroke making snicking behind for an unbelievable 48 off just ten overs. It was a classy innings which unfortunately ended prematurely.
Capt Rob BUTTON came in at three to tyhe introduction of spin, and on a slow wicket the run rate decreased from 8-9 an over to a still strong 5-6.
Ben STEIN continued to score freely with some superb shots untill the introduction of the slowest off break bowler known to man. This caused problems for both batsmen as they found it hard to penetrate the field with boundaries due to the lack of pace on the ball.
After drinks Ben STEIN was caught out on 82 it was a superb innings and it was a shame he couldnt make it to 100.
Harry STEPHENSON unfortunatley went and that allowed Harry KANDAMPULLY to enter the arena.
BUTTON continued to score runs and brought up his half century with a reverse sweep for 2.
After making his 50 and with approximately 15 overs to go and wickets in hand BUTTON trying to increase the tempo was caught on the mid off boundary.
Batsmen came and went increasing the score with the diminishing overs and Harry KANDAMPULLY was finally dismissed after making a brisk 57.
Plymouth ended on 315 all out in the last over which was a great effort on what seemed a fairly slow track.
After the two BENS opened the batting for Plymouth it was time for the two HARRYS to follow (barnes and kandampully).
Unfortunately the Budleigh openers started to do the same as the Plymouth openers hitting boundaries with ease and after 8 overs were in excess of 50 on the board without loss.
TIME FOR SPIN.
PAVI and Capt Rob BUTTON came to the fold and had an immediate impact in slowing the run rate down.
The track did seem to suit the spin attack as both spinners increasingly frustrated the BUDLEIGH batsmen with some tight bowling.
Wickets started to fall at regular intervals, however when the Budleigh batsmen started to block out on a batsmen friendly track the bowlers found it hard to make the necessary breakthroughs.
To change things up PAVI was taken off and Jack Hughes was given a chance to try and make a breakthrough which immediately paid off - however on his 3rd over Jack suffered a recurrance of his ankle injusry and had to be taken off.
BUTTON finished his 15 over spell taking 3 wickets for 31 runs and Ben STEIN replaced him but was unable to take a wicket.
Harry Kandampully came back onto to bowl and took 2 quick wickets leaving Budleigh 9 down with 3 overs to go, however it seemed that the overs came to quickly and the Budleigh batsmen managed to block out leaving Plymouth with a dissapointing 15 point winning draw.
POSITIVES
Our BATTING display once again was top drawer as players stepped up to the mark knowing they are playing for their batting positions - as we now have a full strength squad.
ATTITUDE - the players this year have a real desire to win and keep on winning - the winning draw did almost feel like a loss to the players !!!! keep this up
NEGATIVES - Allthough we didnt feild badly there were times when players were switched off and a couple of time s were caught day dreaming when the ball was travelling towards them - for us to win the league we need to concentrate at all times in the field and back our bowlers up.
Next we face CORNWOOD away who are bottom of the league !! and after their recent problems with first team players being suspended they will undoubtedly be fielding a weakened team - However as they are one of our closet rivals I expect our players to play to their full capabilities - remember we have a league to win and every point is valuable and may count at the end of the season.
