Some players accept that their style of play means they will either score a hatful or be out for 0/single figures - it's the way they play - unfortunately, it's difficult to play against someone like that - ball constantly in the air, dropped chances etc..you expect to dismiss them next ball - everytime
Marlon Crithon was the player who displayed that style on Saturday - Tavistock batted first abd were 14-2, Phil and IIIs debutant Kev Davies taking the early wickets.
I'd seen Crithon's approach in our indoor nets two years ago and he didn't disappoint - a half chance to Gill at deep backward-square followed by two airy shots were the precourse to an hour and three quarters of "see how your luck goes". Included in his innings were some mighty blows as Phil and Richie McPherson found out - I'm surprised Richie's wasn't found on the ferry.
Martin Gill replaced Phil's 5 overs, 1-38 and almost immediately had Crithon caught on the boundary by Richrad Gill only for Rich to fall over the line. Kev took his 2nd and 3rd wickets (he certainly wasn't getting hit anywhere, swinging the ball and causing no end of problems).
Crithon was dropped off a full toss from Richie by the unfortunate Rhys Callicott at point but at 73-5 off 16 overs, no panic had set in....yet.
Tavvy's no. 7 gave the impression that he would play pit-a-pat but out of nowhere, obviously inspired by his batting partner launched Gilly snr. for boundaries and scored a pretty impressive 27. No-one else reached double figures except our friend extras.
Jordan managed to have Crithon very well caught at widish long-on by Liam and finished with 2-28 off 5 overs. Tavvy were all out for 154 off 30 overs - a rather bizarre scorecard. Kev finished with 4-17 in, dare I say, his only ever IIIs outing and proved to be the outstanding bowler on either side.
Plymouth batted with the knowledge that they had 62 overs to score 154.
PCC were 40-4 having seen Jon miss a full straight one, Richie hitting to mid-off, Rich Gill being caught behind and Kev, the same after a brief flurry.
We've lost the knack of winning - maybe those early easy wins were of no benefit. Only one player knuckled down and that was Alex Thomas - undefeated in an example of patience (of which he confessed he doesn't have!)
for 58. Captain Dave was out, bowled following ricochets off both feet but Liam 8 Gilly 0, Jordan 0 (an amazing catch just to rub it in to us), Rhys 4 and 11 from last man Phil who just couldn't summon the mentality needed to just play straight - sorry to Alex, we could have snatched it from them.........
Forecast is bad by all accounts for next week, but something has to click or else Bideford, Brixham and Alphington or Kingsbridge could be some of our opponents next year. Do we really care when we lose? Is it just another game? Answers on the pitch please.
