Without Capt. Barnes the 4th XI took a young side to top of the league Kingskerswell under the command of Deputy Cunningham.
The day didn't start as planned as Joe called incorrectly at the toss and we were stuck into bat. Rothers and Nigel started steadily but both fell in quick succession, firstly Rothers trying to guide the ball to third man but only managing to guide it to the slip then Nigel forgetting he no longer is a teenager took on a second run but fell short by a few yards!! At 25-2 Marcus and Jimmy tried to rebuild and got us to 52-2 at drinks but two balls after Jimmy was bowled. Marcus tried to up the run rate but followed quickly in the same fashion, and things got worse a few overs later when Joe was caught in the covers. Matt Sewell looked solid in defence but eventually one got through and we were 60-6. Matt Allatt and Tristan Rodea both got caught in the same over, then next Sam Knapman was caught going for the slog. Whilst wickets fell, Lewis Edmonds was keeping his wicket and batting sensibly. He and Ben Singlehurst put on about 18 for the last wicket and our innings closed on 89 all out. Marcus top scoring with 20 and Lewis making 15.
Once again the batting failed but against a very disciplined experienced attack who offered very little in '4' balls positives can be taken by some of the youngsters in their patience and discipline in defence.
89 was never going to be anywhere near enough against the league leaders and they took only 12 of the 50 (4 from us) overs to send us packing with no points at all.
One of their opening bats must have had somewhere better to be and blasted 62 of about 25 balls before smacking one at Joe at cover off Nigel. We did 'drop' this player second ball but it would have been the catch of season had Marcus held on at mid off. It looked like a four all the way from the bat but leaping like a salmon Marcus stuck out his left hand and managed to stop the ball mid air. If only!!!
They completed the innings a few overs later without any further losses.
Not a great day and with Plympton winning at Lewdown we have dropped back into the bottom 2.
