4ths WIN AGAINST LOCAL RIVALS

Save to del.icio.us
Plymouth 4ths stepped up to the plate and beat local rivals Plympton 3rds in a close match at Torpoint

Prior to the start of this match all players realised the importance of this fixture and the need to secure a win to prevent the team from being left adrift at the bottom of the table.

The day did not start well as Captain BARNES again lost the toss and the 4ths were asked to bat.
The first couple of overs passed without incident and Plymouth made a comfortable start James ROTHWELL scoring a couple of fluent boundaries. But shortly afterwards he was out to a freak dismissal while Roy BARNES at the other end rode his luck being dropped on a number of occasions in a innings which was fortuitous, gritty and ugly.
Joe CUNNINGHAM again did not enjoy much luck as he came and went for ten and Jon CUMMINGS for the first time this season failed to trouble the scorers, until now progress had been slow against a tight Plympton bowling attack when Mike HOPE came to the wicket.
His arrival coincided with an upturn in Captain BARNES's fluency and the two of them put on over fifty before MIke was unlucky to chop the ball on to his own stumps finishing on 29.
Captain BARNES remained at the wicket and with other partners the run rate increased and Plymouth reached a total of 170 - 8, Captain BARNES being run out in the 42nd over for 73.

The Plympton innings started as the majority of others have this season with them scoring initially at around 6 an over before Jack WIDNELL and Ben SINGLEHURST found their range, reducing the rate and removing three of the Plympton top order. At this point Plymouth seemed to be in the driving seat but the Plympton innings changed with the arrival at the wicket of keeper DAWE who hit a quickfire 58 and took the total to around 120 - 4.
Plympton now held the initiative and with 'GOLDEN ARM' and the 'EFFORD EXPRESS' failing to take wickets ABBO and 'GANDOLF' aka Nige came onto bowl.
The runs quickly dried up and with an improvement in the fielding Plympton started to feel the pressure and they lost wickets at regular intervals the final pair came to the wicket with twenty needed and overs running out.
ABBO finished his spell with 2 - 42 in his 13 overs and the ball was thrown to the 'EFFORD EXPRESS' aka Joe who hit the edge with his first delivery and Ben SINGLEHUST took a comfortable catch at gully which was his second of the match.
Plymouth won by a narrow 9 runs margin and took 18 points from the match.

The bowlers who did so well for the team in addition to ABBO were Nige 11 - 5 - 24 - 4, Jack WIDNELL 7 - 0 - 29 - 2, Ben SINGLEHUST 6 - 1 - 23 - 1.
The fielding display was much improved this week and in addition to Ben other catches were taken by Matt ALLATT, Jack WIDNELL and three for Jon CUMMINGS who gave another fine display with the gloves.

This was a great team effort which showed the necessary commitment and desire to achieve the result which was so greatly needed and if these same levels are maintained in the future the fourths will surely rise up the table.

WELL DONE TO YOU ALL IT WAS A PLEASURE TO BE PART OF THIS
