Plymouth 209-8 (B Stein 52, H Barnes 39, V Kandampully 29no; J Reddick 4-46), Exeter 143 (H Kumar 62, A Fradgley 23; C Hill 3-37, R Button 2-23, B Robins 2-25). Plymouth (20pts) bt Exeter (6) by 66 runs.
Having lost the toss Plymouth were put into bat on a very over cast Exeter Saturday afternoon. With the forecast giving showers turning into rain later we possibly faced an uphill struggle, against the impending elements.
Once again for the third time in a row Plymouth got off to the worst possible start losing 2 quick wickets seeing Harry Stephenson and Harry K back into the pavillion for 16 on the board.
Rob BUTTON came in to batten down the hatches supporting Ben Stein who seemed to hit boundaries with ease.
Button made a scratchy 17 before being caught off the spinner trying to sweep.
After speaking to Ben mid week about tightening up his defences and learning to protect your wicket at all cost, he clearly took this advice on board as he played out the good deliveries with a solid defence, whilst hitting the bad ones to the boundary. Ben was caught in the slips for 52 an then the other Ben F came and went after what looked like a solid start.
Harry BARNES came to the crease under pressure and made a match winning 39 in difficult circumstances.
Harry played a gritty innings and again learnt from his previous innings about protecting your wicket and not giving it away with silly shots.
Chilly chipped in with 20 and Victor K made a quick fire 29 not out leaving Plymouth on 209 - 8.
The positives again from our batting performance was that where several players failed to make their mark others knuckled down for the team and stood up to be counted. It was especially pleasing to see the young duo Ben and Harry bat with some grit and determination this week, especially after getting out in previous weeks with loose shots - hopefully lessons learned and they will carry on scoring vital runs for the team.
We possibly had the strongest bowling attack of the season which wouldnt look out of place in the premier league. With the opening attack of DANUKA and Ben ROBINS and CHILLY coming on as first change Exeter certainly had their work cut out to make the required runs.
ROBINS bowled with fire and passion in a superb opening spell which lasted 9 overs with little reward allbeit proving extremely economical.
Danuka again proved his worth to the team this season bowling out his 14 overs in one spell of big inswinging deliveries which constantly tested the Exeter batsmen.
Chilly replaced Ben ROBBINS and showed why he is a premier league bowler , bowling a superb spell of line and length bowling ending with figures of 13 overs 3 - 37, which included a superd stumping from Harry S from 15 yards!!!!
Captain Rob BUTTON mixed things up bringing some spin into the attack which soon paid dividends taking a thin edge which Harry S caught behind.
With the overs running out and and wickets in hand saw the re-introduction of pace man ROBBINS which proved a vital decision picking up 2 deserved quick wickets.
BUTTON replaced Chilly and with his 3rd ball dismissed the last batsmen with 3 overs to go leaving Plymouth taking all 20 points from their nearest rivals.
This week I really have to big up our players fielding and bowling display in which was by far the most important game of the season to date.
Our fielding looked sharp, we were constantly backing our bowlers with some great chat and the effort the guys put in the field proved its weight in gold as the Exeter batsmen found singles hard to come by.
Again we are not unbeatable in this league and each week we need to improve on our failings week by week.
Next week we face North Devon who are currently 5th in the league but have a great batting line up, in this season they have regularly scored over 200 runs a game.
Their bowling attack is of an unknown quantity and our top order this week need to improve on the last 3 weeks allowing our middle order to enter the game not under pressure.
Every one keep up the hard work it is a pleasure to captain a team with great spirit and willingness to improve on their previous mistakes.
