LESSONS TO BE LEARNT
Hatherleigh 236-8 (T Reynolds 80, A Bennett 37, M Jones 27, J Cherrington 26no; S Stein 2-43, R Button 3-61), Plymouth 237-7 (B Ferero 54, Pavi Mawalage 47, T Hughes 34no, S Stein 38no; R Cherrington 4-77). Plymouth (19pts) bt Hatherleigh (8) by 3 wkts.
Plymouth 2's remain top of the premier 2nd XI by 8 points closely followed by last years champions Sidmouth who are on 70 points.
Plymouth won the toss and decided to bowl at Hathereigh on saturday where we saw a 50 over game reduced by 4 overs due to the weather conditions.
A confident Plymouth side started reasonably well with Sam Stein constantly beating the openers edges with out getting any luck and then dropping a caught and bowled opportunity which seemed to have been caught before dropping to the floor - to the dismay of Steiny.
After both openers were dismissed T REYNOLDS and A BENNETT decided to go on the offensive. R BUTTON appeared to have REYNOLDS caught behind by Harry STEPHENSON when he was in single figures - this diecision was turned down by the umpire he then went on to make 80 before BUTTON got his man again.
On what is a small ground it did not take much bat on ball for the ball to reach the boundaries and with some below par Plymouth bowling and fielding the boundaries soon racked up.
The only mentions of note in the bowling performances was again Sam Stein whose opening spell was economical and extremely unlucky that he did not pick up an extra 2-3 wickets.
Capt Rob BUTTON took 3 wickets but did not bowl to his potential.
Hatherleigh ended up on 236 - 8 off their alloted 46 overs - and in hindsight we gifted them 30-40 runs in the field. And for some of that I take the blame as we may be should of had boundary sweepers from the off start on what was a small outfield.
It can be said that we did enter this game with a mind set that we were going to blow Hatherleigh away and we were going to win again by a massive margin - and on paper we should have !!!! but cricket does not all ways go to the form books.
After the last 3 weeks all top 4 batsmen were in confident moods having all scored runs in previous weeks and the thought of chasing 236 on a fairly decent wicket seemed very achievable.
How that was to change !!!!! opener Ben Stein was bowled for 1 quickly followed b Rob BUTTON who was caught in the slips for a duck, who was then quickly followed by opener Harry STEPHENSON who was also bowled.
Plymouth at this stage were 23 runs down for 3 wickets and the prospect of winning the match seemed in dire trouble.
Passi played some lovely shots before being dubiously caught at square leg where it appeared Passi hit the ball straight into the ground.
In cam Ben FERRAO (SHEEP OF THE WEEK) and Sam STEIN - who steadied the ship with some fine batting. Both batsmen entered the arena with a huge amount of pressure on their shoulders - another quick wicket and the game would almost certainly have been lost.
Sam played superbly well until the over after drinks where he was dismissed on 38, in entered Harry BARNES who looked in great nick for his 17 ,playing anchor role to Ben before he was caught at square leg by an amazing diving catch.
Ben the sheep played superbly for his 54 showing maturity and grit in an innings that deserved a man of the match award, that was until Pavi entered the game.
When Tom HUGHES and Pavi were at the crease we needed approximately another 90 runs and almost 6 an over to win the game with 7 wickets down. Tom batted extremely well constantly rotating the strike between himself and Pavi.
What can i say about Pavis innings !!! other than it was one of the most entertaining innings I have seen in a long time - with the game on a knife edge Pavi batted without fear, hitting some amazing shots to the delight and cheers of the Plymouth boys.
It was good to see all the Plymouth players cheering and clapping every run that both Tom and Pavi scored during their innings - and this showed me a unity within the team that can only stand us in good stead for the season to come.
All though Pavi's match winning 47 earned him man of the match and title of next weeks SHEEP OF THE WEEK - it should be said that without Tom's brilliant 34 not out we would have lost this game and we would of been driving back to PLYMOUTH with our tails between our legs.
Lessons have been learned from this game - particularly from my self as a captain. And from the players in general - we have learned not to under estimate any team in this league if we are going to win the title.
This game gave us the kick in the rear that we needed, after our first 3 comprehensive wins of the season we believed we would have easily beat Hatherleigh and this game has landed our feet firmly back on the ground.
Positive notes taken from the game was our batting performances from our middle and lower order
- Batsmen who were called upon to stand up and be counted !! did so and batted extremely well under difficult circumstances with grit and determination showing a winning mentality, which was missing at times last year.
This week we are home to Plympton our local rivals - I urge everyone to learn from their mistakes from this game and go into Saturdays game with confidence and a winning mentality.
SHEEP OF THE WEEK AWARD GOES TO PAVI FOR HIS BRILLIANT INNINGS OF 47 !!!!
