General NewsPLYMOUTH UNDER 14 played their opening game against Plymstock at MT Wise on a glorious July evening in April.

We batted first and since this was our opening game we thought a total of 120 would be enough. After 10 overs we were 60 for 1 wicket thanks to a fine 35 by Jono including 7 fours and Claire who was not out on 18. She kept finding the fielders with her attacking shots.Stevie came in and batted steadily playing himself in before opening out. Claire got herself out on 23 in a frustrating innings, where she just could not score at her normal rate. Ben playing as a batsman only was run out unluckily as the need for quick runs took over. Stevie batted on to score an excellent 34no including one 6 and four fours and George scored 3 off 3 balls. We closed on our target of 120 for 3.
Dan Goody bowled a superb first over which was a wicket maiden. We were on top. Claire in her first game as captain had to go to plan B when Jack and Barney got hit around and Plymstock were winning it. So Stevie who was only bowling as it was an emergency came on and removed their best batsmen caught by Barney who redeeemed himself after dropping him the previous over. Some great fielding by the team especially Ben who made a magnificent stop on the mid wicket boundary to save 2 runs. Plymstock did not have the batting skills of us but they were big guys and they swung the bat. On a plastic wicket they were always up with the target. Our bowling kept getting wickets with Stevie in a man of the match performance of 4-18, Josh took 2-13 and Dan 2-13 We bowled them out for 113 with one ball left. Travis bowled well with 4 overs for only 16 runs. Well done to Claire and the guys it was close but we won. We are all younger than U15 age group so wins will be difficult. We also need to get more runs as we were a superior team but on plastic wickets we have to watch out for sloggers and we will need to work on our last 5 overs. We need to be looking at more than 29 with only 3 down. A good effort though.
