Plymouth 1stXI V Budleigh Salterton

After a good result against Sidmouth, Plymouth arrived at Budleigh Salterton with spirits high. The pitch looked like there was some moisture in it and the general feeling was that it would dry throughout the day and become easier to score on second dig, Monks lost the toss and we were inserted!

Bishop opened the bowling and hit his straps straight away giving nothing easy to score off. Fortunately, some indifferent bowling from the other end allowed the scoreboard to keep ticking over. Monks and Tomsy gave us a start again by putting on 36 before Monks was struck in front of all three by Bishop for 9. Shortly after, Luke ‘fridge’ Jury was unlucky to bottom edge a ball that kept a little low onto his stumps. A change of bowler brought about the desired result for Budleigh as Dawson’s timid loosener accounted for Tomsy LBW for 41, quickly followed by Rob Button being trapped in front by Bishop to leave us at an undesirable 4-66. Luffers and Nick ‘white tiger’ Read set about rebuilding the innings and did a splendid job. The pair worked the ball into gaps and ran hard to push the scoreboard along without taking and risks. Bishop was seen off having completed his 15 over spell picking up figures of 3-29. The partnership (48) was finally broken by a decision to give Nick run out, a decision that many of the polite spectators described as dubious, and the not so polite considerably worse, for a very well made 24. Twigs joined Luffers and kept pushing us towards a competitive target. Luffers despatched new bowler Marks over the boundary, stream, hedge and fence into the car park to complete a much deserved half century, before falling to the same bowler, stumped for 51, with the score on 167. We pushed on for the last couple of overs and set Budleigh what we though would be a reasonably challenging 179 to win.

Dave opened up and with the first ball wrapped Devon stand in skipper Sandy Allen on the pads but the umpire gave him the benefit of the doubt. Chilli opened from the other end and settled into a decent line and length, which was duly rewarded when Allen snicked behind and was taken by Monks – one big wicket down with only 24 on the board. Spin was introduced early to see how the pitch would respond and the bold move from Monks proved to be a masterstroke as Matt Hooper picked up two wickets in his first two overs, accounting for Viljoen and Sharkey. Coupled together with Burkey removing a nervous looking White and Bishop trying to plant his first ball not only into the sea, but potentially somewhere onto mainland Europe and having his leg stump removed, Budleigh were struggling at 39-5. However Dawson was still there and we knew that whilst he was there anything was still possible. Lloyd Murrin joined him and despite Hooper ripping the ball through his defences time after time, and Dave having him caught off a no-ball, he was able to hang around and build a partnership with Dawson before eventually being dimissed LBW by the impressive JP. Dave finished his spell which proved even more economical than Bishops earlier with his 15 overs costing just 28 runs and claiming 2 wickets. When Murphy was trapped LBW by the swinging Luke Minnet, the score was in the balance at 130-7. At this point a bit of cat and mouse tactics were employed. Monks was allowing the solid looking Dawson a single, but he was unwilling to accept it and expose the lower order batsmen! JP managed to make the climax exciting by claiming another wicket but Budleigh were able to see out the rest of the innings unscathed, mainly thanks to Dawson who ended up 81*, to claim the losing draw, ending on 157-8.

Plymouth had again forced a result many would not have expected prior to the match and there were many positives to take away and keep building on.
