Andy, Sam & Tom steal honours for IIs v Sandford

Save to del.icio.us
In one of the few matches this season where the batters starred, PCC IIs comfortably beat Sandford to do the double over them.

Sandford won the toss on a really mucky day and elected to bowl. the game started in the rain and continued for quite a while (barring one very quick break when the rain sympathised with our exertions to put the covers on).

Phil Stephenson was first to go, for 7 and Alex Hill, on debut for the IIs received a good ball to be bowled for 0.

Dave Watson scored another 30, just avoiding sharing his season's honours with the IIIs. he made 36, falling to a slower ball from Captain Brian Leach.

Both captains became involved in verbal slapstick after Sandford called for play to be suspended claiming the ball was too wet and the afterthought that the run ups were dangerous.........OK....15 mins later the game continued in ever improving conditions with Andy Ware and Tom Hughes playing good cricket to score at a very healthy run rate.

Tom reached 50 and promptly got himslef LBWed but Sam Stein biffed a 27 ball(?) 50 and was unbeaten on 65 after 4 x 6san 4 x 4s - a terrific knock.

Andy played as we have been used to, timing the ball excellently, including 2 x 6s to score 69 as PCC finished on 246-5.

Sandford's reply was positive, notwithstanding their first wicket to go down - a very sharply taken 1st slip catch by the Andy Ware off Jack Dent - 12-1.

Sandford's Captain, who had bruised and battered Phil Barrow's hands at their place, this time gave his shins an introduction to his power but fortunately, he played over a yorker when on 14 and the score on 38.

Sandford continued to play unstifled and following Jack beeing taken off, Ben lasted 3 overs before Pavi came on to display his spin tricks.

Phil was being picked off especially through bowling an inconsistent line and Gilly duly replaced him.

Pavi and Gilly immediatley made it seem as if Sandford's attempt at the win would be just a hope as the ubiquitous Andy Ware took "another" catch of the season covering goodness how many metres/yards to take the catch at his toes at deep mid wicket - a truly fantastic catch.

From the sublime to the ridiculous, Phil dropped a dolly at short mid wicket off Gilly (you will receive the drink in due course) and was swiftly hidden around the corner.

Tom made up for the drop as Steve Morrish was dismissed by Gilly and when Bradley Discombe was run out for 15, the end appeared very near.

Enter Sandford's equivalent to Lance Cairns (look him up those who ask "who?" - I can't think of a current player as they all have to play ultra correctly now....) as Ben Clement walloped a six and 3 fours (seemed more) in gay abandon. He fell at 27 as Gilly took one of his 2 catches and the rest was a procession.

Pavi ended with 4-27 and Gilly 3-38.

He poignantly took the last wicket for PCC IIs at Peverell to end with 218 wickets for the IIs here.

One game to go - let's hope the sun has his hat on and we have our winning hats on at Exeter to gain revenge for losing to them this season.

What a good all round performance to finish at Peverell with. It won't be the same next season after 35 years of walking up the road and staggering home.

Bye Bye Peverell thanks for the memories.
