50 Overs game Maximum of 8 overs per bowler and batsmen must retire after 50 balls received. All players may bat and bowl.
Another early start for all involved with pick up from the billets at 7.30am for a 9.30 start at Wolston Park. The pitch is set in the grounds of a local youth mental health institution and the temptation to leave a number of our players behind for some care was great! Other than that one side of the buildings was being used as a film set (doubling up for East Timor) and on a couple of occasions the match had to be stopped to allow kangaroos to cross the field. Despite these day to day hiccups all went smoothly with the match.
Having decided to field Plymouth quickly took a firm grip on the game. The first 16 overs going for just 29 runs whilst taking 3 wickets, one for Reece Small and two for Ed Court. Consistent bowling for the next 12 overs lead to a position with Wolston Park on 62 for 4 with one batsman retired (having scored just 14) after 28 overs.
At this stage the Plymouth side began to lose concentration and despite no poor performances with a ball the home side were able to score more freely and by the end of the 50 overs had amassed 170 for 9. J Nicholls taking 3 for 15 off 8, T Hughes taking 2 for 31 off 8, E Court taking 2 for 21 off 8, R Small taking 1 for 21 off 8 and A Hutchings taking 1 for 23 off 5.
The Plymouth side took to the pitch needing just 3.5 per over and started off in mean fashion. Joe Cunningham and Joe Barlow established a small opening partnership over the first 6 overs before Chris Lock came to the wicket, followed shortly by Tom Hughes replacing the other opener. The runs began to flow and between the 6th over and the 18th over Plymouth raced from 12 to 100 without further loss.
With just 71 required and two wickets down with Chris retired after 50 balls (scoring 76) the Plymouth side allowed complacency to set in. Tom Hughes was out for a very responsible 13 and then too many batsmen started to play as though it was an English 20 over game, chasing wide balls and playing attacking shots too early in their innings. Some of this was explained by the fact that many of the boys were worried about only having 50 balls before they retired but more pertinent was the lack of thought given to constructing their innings sensibly. This was compounded by some abysmal calling for runs and two needless run outs.
Thankfully both Ben Robins and Reece Small realised the situation and applied themselves to the task required and guided Plymouth through to 171 for 8 and the second win of the tour. Ben Robins scored 31 at the close of the game but continued as is the style in Australia so every one gets a go to 38 before retiring and Reece small scored 14 before going on to 24 no at the close.
Another win for the side. Not the most glorious of victories but certainly a sign that as a team we can hold our own in Australia despite so many peoples misgiving prior to the tour. The next game is Bribie Island on Thursday 11th August when a few more people will be rotated and another win will be recorded we hope. As said before Plymouth are coming and now are 2:1 up beware Australia!!
